While it didn’t make the list of top 10 most searched Google questions about cats, it’s still a fascinating question.
Why Do Cats Butt Their Heads Against You?
Some say that it’s for affection while others say that it’s to stake a claim on you, or rather mark you. Coup de tête as the Frech would say – technically known as bunting or allorubbing it is actually both a way to claim you and show affection.
Bunting or rubbing up against you is specifically used to denote the bond your cat has with you, that they are being social, that they feel comfortable and/or are being friendly. So yes your cat is loving you while simultaneously owning you.
It’s not as black and white as my cat though, scent communication from cats can get pretty complex and I’m certain there is a lot more we have to learn from our little lions in the living room.
The takeaway from being bumped on the head by your cat or sideswiped is that they like you – they really like you. Consider it a hug and definitely a sign that they feel comfortable around you.
