Its time once again to celebrate our students, particularly those that own and operate pet care businesses. It takes hard work to run a business whose number 1 priority is caring for someone else’s pet and it shows a great level of compassion for those business owners that make certain their staff learn how to become pet heroes. This sends a message to current and future clients that this business is demonstrating it has the best interest of their client’s pet as their priority.
Today we are recognizing Laura Daugherty, the owner of PURRfect Pet Companion, LLC, a professional pet sitting and dog walking company servicing Montgomery County, Pennsylvania.
What is the name of your business and what made you choose that particular name?PURRfect Pet Companion, LLC, I chose this name because I wanted something slightly unique / different but also showing that we are a pet’s best friend.
Where is your business located and what areas do you serve? We are located in Hatfield, Pennsylvania (Montgomery County) and service Hatfield, Lansdale and North Wales, Pennsylvania.
How long have you been caring for people’s pets? I feel like I’ve been caring for pets my entire life in one capacity or another, but professionally for about 5.5 years. I started my business right after moving to the Hatfield area in May 2011.
What caused you to start your pet care business? I had just left a career that just wasn’t a good fit for me anymore and had no idea what I wanted to do with my life. I had always cared for family members, friends and neighbors pets’ so my mother suggested this “new thing” she had heard about- a career being a professional pet sitter! I thought I would give it a try and see how it went. I never expected that it would be anything more than just myself occasionally pet sitting to make ends meet. Now I have 8 employees and a couple hundred of clients!
What is the most fulfilling part of owning/managing your business? The most fulfilling part of owning my business is (there are a bunch) – watching the business grow and take off, meeting new people and pets, and creating jobs. It’s also very fulfilling when clients are very happy with our services!
What is the most challenging part? The most challenging part is – you never know what will happen tomorrow. We go through very busy times and very light times – almost like a roller coaster. Another challenging thing is knowing that you can’t please everyone no matter how hard you try.
Where do you see yourself in 5 years? In 5 years, I would still like to be doing this. I’d like us to continue growing (slowly) and possibly hire an assistant / manager to help with customer service, scheduling, etc. I’d like to be able to go on a long vacation without worrying too much!
How has ProPetHero’s pet first aid & CPR certification course benefited your company? The closest “in person” Pet First Aid classes to our territory are often over an hour away. Coordinating my whole staff to be off and able to commute an hour away to an all day class is nearly impossible. Online certification and education looked like the best option for us. After comparing a lot of online courses, ProPetHero’s seemed by far to be the most reputable and credible. The value you get is fantastic for the price. I feel much more confident with my staff completing the Pro Pet Hero course than any other course!
